Halloween Safety: Trick or Treating in Traffic

I always loved trick or treating when I was younger. It is such a fun holiday for children. It can be a dangerous time if children are just running out in the streets and not paying attention to traffic though.

There are so many accidents that can be avoided by us parents really teaching and reminding our children about safety when it comes to traffic. If we are sure that they remember, we will be able to rest easy and enjoy our holiday.

Parents often go trick or treating with their younger children, but as the your children grow up you realize that you can’t always be there for them and sometimes they’ll want to go out trick or treating with their friends. It is so important that they are reminded about safety when it comes to cars and traffic.

Some of your children may think it dumb to go over these rules but even so, they need to be reminded. We can’t just leave it up to the school system or think that we taught them when they were young so now it’s okay.

This isn’t something just for little children. Hundreds of adults are hit every year because they failed to do some of the simple things like looking both ways, or making eye contact with the driver, or thinking that the driver will see you and stop. We need to review over these basic rules.

You must also remember yourself to be looking out for young children as you drive around. Some parents go the extra mile and will drive their children and their friends around as they trick or treat.

If you do drive, make sure that you don’t drop your children off in the road. A good idea would be to pull into the driveways to let them get out. If you have to drop them off in the road, they should be prepared to look both ways and implement the skills you reviewed with them earlier.

Halloween can be such a fun holiday when both our children and us focus on being safe. As tedious as it may sound to review with them all these rules, it is for their safety, and we can never put anything before our children’s safety.
