On Halloween night, our children will be interacting with many strangers. Whether knocking on a door for candy or passing on the street, we need to teach our children the importance of stranger safety.
Dont take for granted that children know how to deal with stranger because of school or even discussions at home. If children need to be told five times to take out the garbage, they may need to be told at least that many times about stranger safety.
The number one rule to teach children is the importance of never giving personal information to strangers. Adults shouldnt be asking children about their family or home, even when trick or treating.
Teach them to avoid talking to strangers who pull up next to them in a car. Its okay for children to flat out ignore them. If an adult needs help or direction, they can speak to children at a distance. Children should stay out of reach from any stranger.
If someone looks even slightly suspicious walking around, avoid them at all cost. Dont talk or even walk by them. Cross the street if you can.
Always go with a group of people. If your children or teens are trick or treating they will always be safe with a crowd, or even better yet, with YOU!
Never enter a home when you are trick-or-treating. Immediately leave if you are invited inside ” even if it seems to be a good reason. Explain to children that there are no good reasons to enter a strangers home.
