Halloween Safety: Enjoy Safe Candy

With all the other distractions that are going on during the Halloween season, sometimes candy safety is the last thing on our list. But it is really important that we talk to our children about it and that we do other things ourselves to make sure that the candy our children eat is safe.

Make sure your children dont eat any of their candy until you can examine it safely at home. Most parents dont want to take the time examining every piece of candy that their child has gathered, but we always need to be cautious and think of safety first.

When you examine the candy, make sure that everything is wrapped. If you find that some of the wrapping may be loose or that even a tiny corner has been opened, throw it away.

It is smart to only go to those people that you know to trick or treat. I realize that this isnt always possible though. If you are given anything homemade, make sure that those who gave it to you are friends, if not, throw it out.

If you start eating something and then realize the taste is a little off, spit it out quickly. Some people save candy from year to year and try using it again. You dont want to eat old candy.

It is also important that we place limits on how much candy our children eat. The worst is for them to eat too much and not feel well for the next couple days.

Let them know how much they can eat on a daily bases. It isnt very healthy if we let our children eat their candy all day every day till it is gone. They will experience dramatic sugar highs and lows and wont sleep as well.
